The idea of creating Continental Kid began in March 2007 after Marcella Hoff took a trip to the Bahamas with her 5 month old, 9 year old, and 14 year old children. As she packed for the trip, she noticed that the 5 month old needed the biggest suitcase of all and that his clothes only took up a tiny corner. The rest of the suitcase was overflowing with diapers, formula, food and other disposable items. The older kids had packed all of the toys and gear that they would need to have fun on the beach into another suitcase and that her husband was trying to shove his toiletries into any suitcase in which they would fit. In addition to the luggage that was to be checked on to the plane, every member of the family had an overflowing carry on bag filled with things to do on the plane, changes of clothes, and enough snacks to feed a small army.

Upon arriving in the Bahamas, the Hoff family and its 12 pieces of luggage was laughed at by every baggage porter they met. After enduring countless jokes about their luggage Marcella began to think that there had to be a better way to travel with kids, a way to travel with less luggage, and a way to travel with less hassle. Marcella decided to team up with fellow mothers and world travelers Christina Rhoad and Marilyn Duran to create a company that specializes in providing products, services, and solutions that enable and provide for enjoyable, comfortable, and hassle free family travel.
